Morella: Castle, Rock Art and Paths along the City Walls
Morella combines a castle protected as a BIC with an impressive city-wall structure, religious art, rock paintings and nature. This creates a destination where culture, paths along the city walls, nature observation and the regional cheese-making tradition come together.
Castle, City Walls and Views
Morella Castle is a fortress protected as a BIC. It was built using the natural shape of the mountain; from its parade ground, it offers views across the interior of the Valencian Community. The visit follows stairways along the mountain through various areas formerly used for military purposes and can take around one hour. The stairs and the approximate duration can be taken into account when planning this castle visit.
The Torres de San Miguel are the main entrance to the town of Morella: two octagonal twin towers dating from the 14th century. They form a prominent part of the city-wall structure surrounding the town. During a visit, both towers can be viewed from inside. The connecting bridge leads you to the terrace; you can also walk along a section of the battlement walkway as far as the Puerta de la Nevera.
Church Art and Rock Paintings
The BasÃlica Arciprestal Santa MarÃa la Mayor has the Portals of the Apostles and the Virgins, a spiral choir staircase and a depiction of the Last Judgement in the choir area. The basilica includes the Museo Arciprestal, with important paintings and religious goldsmithery. Admission to the museum is included in the basilica admission fee.
The rock paintings of Morella la Vella are located in the nearby surroundings of Morella, approximately 6 km away. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, they form part of Levantine rock art and mainly depict hunting scenes and schematic representations.

The municipality of Morella is associated with 160 observable bird species. Morella has several zones and routes for birdwatching on public land that are easily accessible and walkable. Information boards provide details about the species that can be observed there.
The GR-331 Els Ports – Camino de la conquista is one of the hiking trails in Morella. The Paseo alrededor de las murallas is one of the walking routes in Morella.
Cheese-Making Tradition and Regional Connections
Morella has an artisanal cheese-making tradition with significant production of sheep’s- and goat’s-milk cheese. At some cheese dairies, you can visit the factory and follow the production process.
For transport connections, the N-232 is the main route from Morella to Zaragoza and Logroño. It also connects the town with Valencian destinations on the coast, the Autopista del Mediterráneo (AP-7) and the N-340 road.
