Palanques combines impressive traces of the past with nature experiences and a varied calendar of festivals. Church, rock art and historic traces

The “Parish Church of the Assumption” is an 18th-century Baroque church. Inside are the remains of the small Gothic portal of the former parish church from the 14th century. The Cingle de Palanques offers a much older glimpse into the past: it comprises two rock overhangs with naturalistic rock paintings and hunting scenes. The depictions date from the Neolithic period and are more than 5,000 years old.

Roca Tallà also leads into the history of the town. The archaeological site lies in the western part of the municipality of Palanques and is a historic testimony to the ancient Roman route between Aragón and Valencia in both directions. A rectangular watchtower also stood on the upper Cingle, serving to monitor the area and the routes. A stone fountain with a round arch is dated 1627 and has fresh water throughout the year.

Walks, viewpoints and nature

Access to the rock overhangs of the Cingle de Palanques begins in the town centre and is considered an easy walk. Sant Antoni is celebrated in Palanques in January. The celebration includes building and burning a Barraca at night, accompanied by the Diablera. The rest of the year is also shaped by community traditions. The spring pilgrimages from Palanques include a pilgrimage to the Sant Bernabé hermitage on the Saturday after 11 June. In October, the Bureo and the Ball del Rotlle bring residents and visitors together for a traditional dance from Palanques, accompanied by music from participating Rondallas.
