Vilafamés combines art in a historic palace, fortress walls, geological formations and sporting experiences. If you would like to combine culture, landscape and the area's distinctive history, you will find several independent starting points here for planning your trip.
Art and Historic Complex
MACVAC houses more than a thousand works of art and is located in the Palau del Batlle, a 15th-century palace. During guided tours on offer, experts explain the paintings. This places both the collection and its setting in a historic building at the centre of the experience.
Castillo de Vilafamés has Andalusian origins. The historic complex is surrounded by a wall built in the 14th century. The Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción has a main altarpiece from the early 17th century, while the Iglesia de la Sangre is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural.
Further traces date back to the late Iberian period: the “Els Estrets - El Racó de Rata” archaeological site dates from the 3rd to the 1st century BC and includes walls, dwellings, as well as square and round towers. The Ruta de los artistas leads to artists who acquired houses in Vilafamés, including Vicente Aguilera, Joaquín Michavila, Juan Daniel Domínguez «Progreso», Gabriel Cantalapiedra, José Palanca, Agustín de Celis, Miranda d'Amico, José Agost, Manuel Menán, Uiso Alemany, Juan Reus, Francisco Lozano, Manuel Viola, Lorenzo Frechilla, Isabel Vilar, Eduardo Sanz, Teresa Eguibar, Manolo Salmanca, Roberta Matheu, Julio Salvatierra, Manolo Safont, Beatriz Buttmann, Nassio Bayarri and Vicent Varella.
Landscape and Deep Time
One of the area's striking natural features is Roques de Mallasén, a geological formation from the Triassic period characterised by continental red sandstone. South of Vilafamés lies the PNM Sant Miquel on Mount Mollet. The paths there encompass the surroundings of the Ermita de San Miquel, dated to 1640.
The cave at Tossal de la Font contains the oldest traces of human settlement in Vilafamés. They are between 90,000 and 70,000 years old and are attributed to Homo neanderthalensis. Cova del Bolimini has a large interior space that visitors can admire. A large reddish sedimentary rock is known as “rodeno”.
Cycling and Running Experiences
The self-guided tour ebike por Vilafamés offers routes lasting from two hours and varying levels of difficulty. The Trail Running Center is a permanent tourism and sports facility in the natural surroundings of Vilafamés, designed for trail running. It includes a permanently marked network of trails with official trail-running signage.
For practical planning, the centre also has a reception centre with changing rooms, lockers and showers. This makes it possible to organise cultural visits and activity-focused days in Vilafamés according to different interests, without combining the experiences into a single programme.
Events and Recent History
Vilafamés 1900 recreates 40 scenes of everyday life from the early 20th century, with live performances and contemporary everyday characters in the historic complex. The Festival Internacional de Cine de Vilafamés takes place annually. The celebrations also include a pilgrimage to the Ermita de San Miguel, where the town's patron saint is venerated.
The Campo de Aviación de Vilafamés was built in 1937 by the government of the Second Spanish Republic. It includes more than 200 metres of trenches. This site adds a documented chapter of 20th-century history to the older traces of the castle, churches and settlements.
Orientation for Your Stay
The streets in the centre of Vilafamés are predominantly pedestrian streets. There is free public parking on the outskirts of the town. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore first consider whether your focus is on MACVAC and historic buildings, on the landscape and trails, or on events and local history.
