Alberic: Historical Traces, Routes and Panquemaos

Alberic combines historic buildings, paths along the Río Júcar, orange grove landscapes, and its own pastry tradition.

Historical Traces in the Townscape

Among the town’s defining buildings is the Iglesia Parroquial de San Lorenzo Mártir, built between the 17th and 18th centuries. The Antiguo Convento de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles also dates from the 18th century. The antigua casa consistorial, the former town hall, likewise dates from this century. On a walk through Alberic, you can also see various traditional and grand houses. A historical tour can take in the church, former convent, and town hall as different stops in the townscape. Domingo de Ramos is a day filled with numerous traditions in Alberic.

The historic water structures deserve special attention. The cistern of Alberic’s former manor palace is a hydraulic structure built in the 13th century. It is the only surviving element of the former manor palace, which was demolished in the 19th century. Several centuries thus lie between the construction of the cistern and the demolition of the palace. An Arab cistern at Plaza de la Constitución is considered one of the largest in the Comunitat Valenciana. The two cisterns have different local associations: one belongs to the former manor palace, while the other is located at Plaza de la Constitución. The Ermita de la Virgen de Cullera is located in the La Troneta district. The two chapels are in different locations: Santa Bárbara outside Alberic, and Virgen de Cullera in La Troneta. Alberic’s streets also form an open-air museum featuring urban art works, adding a contemporary dimension to the tour.

Getting Around on Foot and by Bicycle

There are also specific destinations for an excursion outside Alberic. The Ermita de Santa Bárbara is located on the “Muntanyeta”; it lies outside Alberic and can be reached on foot. Along the Río Júcar, you can walk by following its course. This creates a connection between exploring the town and exercising in the landscape, without requiring a single, fixed type of excursion.

The orange grove landscapes around Alberic are ideal for cycling. There are also routes to destinations such as the Cova de la Terreta. Panquemaos, Monas and a Date in October

Panquemaos or Monas are considered sweet pastries of Arab origin in Alberic. The Panquemaos tradition has its own festival in October. One specific date is 8 October: on this day, the members of the Gremio de Horneros give the residents a Panquemao tasting and a cup of hot chocolate.
