AlgemesÃ: Festival Culture, Architecture and Nature
Festival and Historical Traces
The Festa de la Mare de Déu de la Salut takes place in Algemesà every year on 7 and 8 September. The programme includes theatre, music, dance and performances in historic areas of the town. The Muixeranga is also associated with AlgemesÃ: the oldest chronicles linking this tradition to the town date from the early years of the 18th century.
Art and Architectural Heritage
The Museu Valencià de la Festa is housed in the Renaissance building of the Convento de San Vicente Ferrer, which was built by Dominican friars in 1590. The museum presents exhibitions on the history, clothing and music of the Festa de la Mare de Déu de la Salut. The Basilica of St. James is a Renaissance basilica and an art-historical building dating from the 15th century. It houses an altarpiece by Juan Ribalta; an organ was also built by the local organist Juan Cabanilles. The altarpiece and the organ each create a distinct focal point in the basilica.
The Casino Lliberal is a modernist building dating from 1911 and served as a centre of public life for much of the 20th century. The historic layout of the Casino Lliberal included an exhibition hall and an event hall in the theatre of the former radio station. The Casa de la Senyora Pepa is a monastic complex dating from the 19th century and serves as a pilgrimage site.
River Landscape and Nature
The Llacuna del Samaruc is a fauna reserve in the Parc Natural de l'Albufera. La Xopera is located at the confluence of the Magro and Júcar rivers and has a tree-shaded picnic area. Activities such as fishing and canoeing are also possible in La Xopera.
Routes for Different Days
The 10-kilometre Ruta Ambiental i Saludable connects Algemesà with the Llacuna del Samaruc and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. During guided visits to the Llacuna del Samaruc, visitors can identify frogs, birds and insects and learn more about their way of life. The Ruta Saludable is just over four kilometres long and is suitable for walking, running or cycling. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in how they combine physical activity with experiencing nature.
