Loriguilla: Churches, Masía del Conde and the Reservoir

Church and relocation

The parish church of San Juan Bautista was inaugurated on 1 March 1968. This happened after the church in the old village ceased operating and the residents moved from the Serranía to the Comarca Camp de Túria. The church therefore also represents the relocation that shapes Loriguilla's history.

The church and bell tower display a rationalist and functionalist style typical of Franco-era architecture. Together, they occupy an area of 624 square metres at the highest point in the municipality. Ermita and Masía del Conde

The Ermita de la Soledad rises on a hill about 1 kilometre from Loriguilla, above the ancient Visigothic archaeological site of Pla de Nadal. Its rectangular floor plan, rendered brickwork, carefully worked rubble masonry and single-pitched roof with Arabic tiles give the building a precise architectural profile. The porch is supported by five masonry pillars that widen towards the bottom.

The Masía del Conde also draws attention to its handcrafted details. Throughout the interior are multicoloured tiles with geometric and Orientalist designs, made in the kilns of Manises and painted by hand. On the north side of the courtyard there were also an oil mill and containers for wine production.

Reservoir and orientation within the municipality

The Embalse de Loriguilla adds a major infrastructure feature to this architectural and local history. The reservoir was inaugurated on 27 November 1967 with a maximum capacity of 71 hectometres cubed. In February 1968, 794 residents moved to the new location in the Comarca Camp de Túria, which at the time belonged to the area of Riba-roja.

For excursions, the map of the old municipal area provides signposted routes, photographs of sites and information useful to visitors. The route from Valencia to Loriguilla follows the paved Camino Masía del Conde into the town and then continues along Ángel Custodio, Joaquín Lleó and Mayor streets to the square with the church and town hall.

The planned programme for the traditional Romería al Pueblo Viejo de Loriguilla on 26 May 2024 included a bus trip, breakfast, various activities, a short Mass in front of the church, a paella meal, music, dancing, domino games, card games and traditional games. The XX Volta a Peu in Loriguilla includes children's races and a 10-kilometre race for adults.
