Water Engineering and Local History

At the Molí Nou Watermill Museum, Quartell preserves wooden machinery from wheat and rice mills. The museum also features permanent exhibitions on rice cultivation, agricultural equipment powered by draught animals, the municipal collection of weights and measures, and objects from traditional society under the theme of energy. The 18th-century rice mill wheel has also been preserved there.

Another notable building is the parish church of Santa Ana. It was built in the Baroque style in the 17th century; inside is an Ecce Homo attributed to Juan de Juanes. The Sistar de Quartell is a 15th-century water-distribution building and is considered the largest water divider on the Ruta del Agua.

Hiking Trails with Regional Character

The Ruta de l’Aigua is a signposted route with information panels. Along the route, traditional water-engineering facilities such as water dividers, irrigation channels and mills are explained. Over eleven editions, the festival consistently offered concerts and educational programmes featuring national and international guest artists. Twelve guest artists took part in each edition, with more than 130 in total.

The connection with Joaquín Rodrigo also dates back to his early years: he visited Quartell repeatedly, played there and walked through the town’s streets until his grandmother died. The festivals also give Quartell a distinctive cultural profile. On the first Friday of the patron-saint festivals, young people erect a large pine tree in the town hall square during the Plantà del Pi, followed by a Cordà.

Holy Week includes a performance of the Passion of Christ with more than 100 local performers and natural settings throughout the town.

The El Quadro wetland lies in the immediate vicinity of Quartell. Visitors can observe birds, plants and other animals there.
