Hurchillo between Sierra Landscapes and Local History

Hurchillo is a destination for you if you would like to get to know a place through its landscapes, nature and history at the same time. The officially approved SL-CV 139 hiking trail, the elevations around Monte and Sierra de Hurchillo, and several cultural and historical sites give the area different facets. Mountain landscape on the edge of the Vega del Segura

Monte de Hurchillo lies south of Arneva and Hurchillo. Its northern boundary approximately follows the road connecting the two settlements. At the same time, Monte de Hurchillo forms part of the series of elevations that make up the southern edge of the Vega del Segura on the right bank of the river. This geographical setting helps explain why the landscape around Hurchillo is shaped not only by the town itself, but also by distinctive landforms.

The Sierra de Hurchillo features numerous ravines and slopes and reaches a maximum height of 269 metres. Visitors who enjoy paying closer attention to landforms and landscape areas during their stay will therefore find a specific natural theme here beyond a simple visit to the town. The approximate location of the Monte's northern boundary retains the character of an orientation point without claiming to define an exact limit.

Birds and plants on Monte de Hurchillo

The wildlife and plant life are also part of the character of Monte de Hurchillo. Birds that breed there include the common buzzard, as well as rock-dwelling species such as the kestrel, little owl and European bee-eater. Those interested in nature observation will therefore find a specific range of bird species here, closely connected with the landscape of slopes and ravines.

Aleppo pines, mastic shrubs, blackthorn and thyme grow on Monte de Hurchillo. There are also plant communities on gypsum-rich soils. The combination of characteristic woody plants, aromatic shrubs and distinctive soil conditions gives this natural area its own diversity and complements the hiking and landscape experience with botanical aspects.

Hiking with views of the surrounding area

Hurchillo has the officially approved SL-CV 139 hiking trail. The trail was improved and positioned as an environmental, sporting and tourist resource for residents and visitors as part of the municipal enhancement of officially approved hiking trails. Alongside the natural area, the SL-CV 139 hiking trail is therefore a central feature, making Hurchillo interesting for active excursions.

The route “Discover the Vega from the Sierra de Hurchillo” was scheduled for Saturday, 19 September, and was intended to explore the landscape and natural surroundings of Orihuela. Its focus was therefore on experiencing the Vega and the surroundings of Orihuela from the Sierra de Hurchillo. This connection may be helpful to you if, during your stay, you would like to consider not only the town but also the landscape as part of your travel experience.

Local history in several locations

Hurchillo can also be explored through an official guided route focusing on the history of the town. One of its stops was the Church of Hurchillo. The route also included the house of the singer Pepe Baldó, a place locally known as “el rincón”, where the irrigation system of Hurchillo was explained, as well as the “Los Aljibes” Cultural Centre. Together, these stops lead from the religious history of the town through a local artistic figure to water management and culture.

Pepe Baldó is also connected to Hurchillo through a specific biography: José Baldó Javaloyes, known by the stage name Pepe Baldó and previously as “El Niño de Hurchillo”, was born in 1935 in Rincón de Portillo. Rincón de Portillo is a pedanía of Hurchillo in Orihuela (Alicante). Those interested in regional culture and notable figures will therefore encounter in Hurchillo not only buildings and landscapes, but also a name closely connected with the area.
