Cinctorres: Hiking Trails, Dinosaur Finds and Regional Culture

Cinctorres has several clearly recognisable facets: hiking trails and a mountain-bike route network stand alongside rocky landscapes, a palaeontological site, museums, festival traditions and regional cuisine. Hiking Trails, Mountain Biking and the Rambla de Sellumbres

Cinctorres has seven easy-to-manage hiking trails, ranging from 5.8 to 9.9 kilometres in length. The GR 331 Camí de Conquesta is a 166-kilometre circular route through the Els Ports comarca, divided into 15 stages. As a longer circular route, it complements the shorter trails. The PR-CV 118 San Cristóbal is 5.8 kilometres long and leads to the Ermita de San Cristóbal, which offers panoramic views over the municipality.

Cinctorres’ mountain-bike route network comprises signposted routes of varying difficulty; they run mainly along roads with little traffic and mostly unpaved sections. The Rambla de Sellumbres gorge has two via ferratas: one with a K2 difficulty rating and another with a K6 rating. The gorge is flanked by rock walls more than 100 metres high. Spanish ibex and griffon vultures are frequently found in the natural area; it is also rich in endemic plants.

Palau, Museums and Dinosaur Finds

The Palau de Sant Joans is a building of civil Gothic architecture with noble origins dating back to the 15th century; its surviving structure dates from the 17th century. The Museo Parroquial displays objects, relics, texts and historical elements connected with Cinctorres’ ecclesiastical tradition. The Museo de la Faixa presents the production processes of the traditional sash, from the looms to the making of the cords. The Yacimiento Ana is set up for visits and has information panels as well as replicas of dinosaur bones. A total of 937 fossils were recovered at the Yacimiento Ana; most of them came from dinosaurs that are approximately 126 million years old. The Dinomania experience includes a guided visit to the dinosaur site in Cinctorres. The Museu de Dinosaures de Cinctorres was housed in the Palau de Sant Joans; the palace was undergoing restoration at the time in question, and museum visits had been postponed.

Cuisine and Festival Traditions

Traditional Cinctorres cuisine includes Ternasco lamb, ham, cecina, frito, cuajada, and the sweet treats Las Coquetas and Almendrados. The Sant Antoni festival takes place every year on the last weekend of January. It includes building and later burning a barraca, as well as having horses pull a holm oak through the town’s streets.
