Jérica: Tower, History and Landscape

Jérica can be explored through its prominent buildings, archaeological traces and the landscape at La Vuelta de la Hoz. Historical Site and Notable Buildings

The historical site of Jérica preserves remains of defensive architecture, significant religious buildings and examples of vernacular architecture. It also includes remains indicating the existence of a prehistoric settlement.

The Torre de las Campanas – Torre Mudéjar de Jérica or Torre de la Alcudia – is considered the most representative monument of the municipality of Jérica. The tower consists of three octagonal structures. Its lower structure probably comes from an Arab defensive structure that was presumably built in the 12th century.

The Iglesia del Cristo de la Sangre was built in the Baroque style, with a rectangular floor plan and a single nave. Its current appearance is the result of later Neoclassical renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Archaeological finds are also part of the town’s history: Numerous Roman gravestones with Latin inscriptions, as well as coins and pottery fragments, have been found in Jérica and within the municipal area.

La Vuelta de la Hoz and Paths in the Surrounding Area

La Vuelta de la Hoz is a meander of the Palancia River that has eroded the mountain’s rock face. The area includes a route or walking path as well as picnic areas. There are also climbing routes with impressive views.

In Jérica, paths and routes lead to old trenches, livestock shelters and azudes, historic hydraulic structures. The Gothic structure Cruz Cubierta lies outside the town centre of Jérica and is one of the local sights.

As part of the Fiestas en Honor a la Divina Pastora, a traditional night-time hand-ringing of the bells takes place in Jérica every year on the Friday before the third Sunday in September. Walnuts, salt cod, bread and wine are distributed to those present.
