La Serra D'en Galceran – Nature, Trails and Valencian Cultural Heritage

Between Hiking Trails and Local History

La Serra D'en Galceran combines striking landscapes with an unusually diverse local history. In the town centre of Sierra-Engarcerán stands the old ice house, which is unique in the Valencian Community. The Quercus Valentina is also part of the area's natural and cultural character: a native, majestic oak that the botanist Cavanilles catalogued in the 18th century. Typical seasonal products of Sierra-Engarcerán include game, robellones and snails.

Circular Routes through Forests and Cultural Landscapes

For walks, the SL-CV 94 is a good option, a circular route with gentle climbs that is considered suitable for walks with the whole family. It passes the remains of an Iberian settlement. The PR-CV 350 runs through old holm-oak forests, groups of masías with distinctive buildings, dry-farmed land with almond and olive trees, and along dry-stone walls. This route is associated with the protected areas of Serra d'en Galceran as a ZEC (Zona de Especial Conservación) and as an LIC (Lugar de Importancia Comunitaria). The PR-CV 349 leads to Tosal de Zaragoza, one of the highest-altitude places in Sierra Engarcerán.

Gothic, Baroque and Local Collections

The Fort o Castell-Palau Casalduch is a remarkable example of Valencian civil Gothic architecture and preserves its original façade. Its upper floor houses a museum collection dedicated to Bishop Felipe Bertran. The Iglesia de San Bartolomé is considered a typical Baroque church of the region. Construction of the present-day church began in 1580 and was not completed until 1767. The Museo Francisco Agut opened in 2011 and is located on Carrer Sant Antoni in the town centre of Sierra Engarcerán.

Archaeological Traces and Distinctive Motifs

The Obispo Beltrán collection displays Palaeolithic stone tools found at the Abric d'En Melia, dating to approximately 10,000 BC. Also on display is a 10th-century Alquerque game discovered at Tossal de la Vila. The Museo Francisco Agut also includes a year-round collection of coats of arms and crosses carved in stone. In the Barranco de la Guitarra there is a smooth limestone overhang with engraved carvings. These include 15 animal figures and numerous signs measuring between 5 and 40 cm.

Mountains, Views and Protected Nature

The Ermita de San Miguel is visited twice a year as part of a pilgrimage: on the first Sunday in May for the Fira de la Santa Creu and on the Sunday closest to 29 September for the San Miguel festival. From there, there are extensive views across the comarca. The ermita can be reached via a signposted turn-off and a short, approximately 200-metre-long paved road. For active tourism, Sierra-Engarcerán has via ferratas; the Barranco de la Guitarra is also an area with climbing opportunities. La Cova Santa is a natural cave on the grounds of the Masía de Gaspar; its other name is Cueva de la Masía de Gaspar. It is a habitat of the invertebrate arthropod Gollumjapys smeagol, and is closed for its protection, with visits possible only after contacting the municipal administration.
