Villahermosa Del Río: Gorges, Mountain Trails and Cultural Heritage

Villahermosa Del Río showcases the Comunitat Valenciana in its mountainous, water-rich and historically significant form. The Penyagolosa Natural Park also extends across the municipality. The Río Carbo lies at the foot of Penyagolosa, while trails lead through gorges, forests and high-altitude landscapes. This makes the town particularly interesting if you want to combine nature experiences, hiking and culture in a rural destination.

Churches and Traces of History

The Nuestra Señora de la Natividad Church is classified as a locally protected monument. Its floor plan follows the shape of a Latin cross, with a nave, two aisles, transept and a presbytery with an octagonal end. The parish church also contains Gothic altarpieces attributed to the Maestro de Villahermosa.

The preserved El Tamborete tower is also one of the historic buildings. It is of Arab origin and belonged to fortifications dating from the early Reconquista. The Ermita San Antonio Abad is a church from the Reconquista period and is designated as a locally protected monument. Its murals depict San Cristóbal and San Sebastián and are considered rare surviving examples of this type of wall painting in the region.

Gorges, Rivers and Waterfalls

The Barranco de la Hoz circular hike passes through the Hoz gorge of the Río Carbo and begins at the recreation area where the Río Carbo meets the Río Villahermosa. The restored Roman-Gothic Bridge provides access to the start of this route. Another route is the Cascada Río Carbo trail: it starts at Plaza de la Iglesia by the tourist information office, leads through the town to the river and passes an old mill, several waterfalls and pools such as the Pozo Negro.

The Barranco Magro route begins at the CV-175 and descends directly into the gorge. There, you can see geology shaped by the erosion of Triassic mountains; the gorges consist mainly of limestone. The route is considered prone to flooding and slippery. The Cascada la Tosca route begins at the foot of the Ermita San Antonio and leads to the Paraje de la Tosca. La Tosca is a natural cave with a water source and limestone formations such as stalactites and stalagmites. To protect the vegetation and formations, the cave remains closed; the area is designated as a protected natural area.

Mountain Trails and Wildlife Observation

On the Pino Cacho–San Bartolomé route, you reach Pino Cacho after approximately 3.6 kilometres from the end of Calle Hospital. The trail passes through pine and holm oak forests, and griffon vultures are frequently spotted along the route. The Monte Altís route reaches the summit of Altís at an elevation of 1,300 metres. Its natural viewpoints offer views of Penyagolosa; griffon vultures, golden eagles, Iberian ibex and wild boar can often be observed there.

The rugged surroundings can also be experienced on special routes. The La Muela via ferrata is 140 metres long, climbs 100 metres in elevation and offers views of the area around Villahermosa Del Río. The La Mina via ferrata combines an equipped, scenic climbing route with a passage through an underground section of the former La Amorosa copper mine.

Routes to Penyagolosa

The route from Villahermosa Del Río to the San Juan de Peñagolosa sanctuary begins in the town and can be completed on foot or in your own vehicle. The GR-7 stage from Sant Joan de Penyagolosa to Villahermosa Del Río is 11.9 kilometres long. The GR 7 E31 stage begins in Villahermosa Del Río and ends at the CV-196 near San Vicente de Piedrahita in Cortes de Arenoso. It is linked to the Penyagolosa protected areas designated as a ZEPA and an LIC.

Another destination is the Ermita de San Bartolomé, approximately 8 kilometres from Villahermosa Del Río. It is designated as a locally protected monument and can be reached via the CV-197. The different route lengths and starting points give you room to coordinate your daily plans between the town, river landscape and mountain area.

Information, Trout and a Festival in January

The Tourist Info Villahermosa Del Río provides tourist information, assistance and orientation for the municipality and the entire Comunitat Valenciana. To visit the Piscifactoría de Villahermosa Del Río, you can contact the town hall or tourist information office in advance so that the facilities and their functions can be explained. Trout raised there can be caught in the lake at the Piscifactoría.

In January, Villahermosa Del Río celebrates the festival in honour of San Antonio Abad on the weekend closest to 17 January. It includes a large bonfire, the blessing of the animals, a procession and the distribution of handmade blessed flatbreads.
