Casas Bajas between Local History and the Turia Landscape

Casas Bajas combines a distinctive townscape with paths, waterscapes, historic buildings and its own culinary tradition. The oldest quarter lies in the north; steep, winding streets give this part of the town its characteristic layout.

Historic Townscape and Cultural Traces

The broad Plaza del Rey Don Jaime was created through successive extensions. It features the parish church of El Salvador as well as an interesting belt of barns surrounding the town. The landscape also reveals itself through its natural water and riverside features. The natural springs in Casas Bajas include Armajal, Cañora and Vandonguillo. There are riverside forests along the Turia in Casas Bajas. Casas Bajas is part of the UNESCO-declared Alto Turia Biosphere Reserve, which extends across several municipalities in the provinces of Valencia and Teruel.

Gachas and Local Flavour

Casas Bajas also has a specific regional culinary speciality: Gachas is a typical dish in Casas Bajas and throughout the Rincón de Ademuz. It is prepared in a copper pot, in which salt and water are brought to the boil, after which corn or wheat flour is added.
