Gátova between Natural Park and Cultural Heritage

Gátova combines a green, natural landscape with distinctive traces of bygone eras. Natural surroundings and trails around Gátova

The entire area of Gátova lies within Sierra Calderona Natural Park. The landscape is characterized by traditional and historic structures connected with agriculture. These include cisterns, livestock shelters and windmills, which give the natural surroundings a distinctly human and agricultural character.

Fuente de Iranzo is located just a few minutes from Gátova’s town center and is accessible to walkers of all kinds. Gorgo can be reached from Gátova and, at 907 meters, is the highest point in Sierra Calderona Natural Park. Anyone wishing to take nature and exercise into account when planning their day will therefore find two different options: an easy-to-manage walk near the town and a prominent high point in the park.

Archaeology, church architecture and views

Castillo de Torrejón is an Iberian archaeological site that was inhabited from the 6th to the 2nd–1st century BC. The site is located in a strategic position offering views over the surrounding area. Gátova Town Council offers free guided tours of Castillo de Torrejón all year round with a specialized guide.

The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles also provides a clear architectural focal point. It features a Corinthian temple structure with two naves and side chapels. Its design also includes a façade with a triangular pediment, a door with a straight lintel and a Marian coat of arms, as well as a two-storey bell tower.

Molino de la Ceja is a monument built in the 18th century. The building can be visited via a well-maintained road and is now set up as an attractive viewpoint. From inside the mill building, you can look out over the immediate surroundings. Together with the Piñel Aqueduct, one of Gátova’s attractions, the mill broadens the view of the town’s historic buildings.

A festival with historical memory

The Fiesta del Cerdo de Gàtova has been held since 2014 on the third or fourth Saturday in February, at the same time as San Antón. Today’s festival commemorates the former, now discontinued tradition of winter pig slaughtering in Gátova. The date and the remembrance of this local tradition make the festival a special cultural point of reference when planning a trip in February.
