L’Alfàs del Pi and l’Albir: Beach, Serra Gelada and Day Trips

L’Alfàs del Pi lies between the Mediterranean Sea and the protected mountain and coastal landscape of Serra Gelada. The municipality’s name covers more than just the beach resort: the main town is inland, while l’Albir is right on the coast. This distinction is important when planning a holiday. If you want to walk to the sea in the morning, choose accommodation in l’Albir; if you’re looking for restaurants, local everyday life and a quieter base, consider staying in the town centre. Both areas are also well placed for trips to nearby towns.

L’Albir: Pebble beach and promenade

Platja de l’Albir is a beach of pebbles and coarse sand at the foot of Serra Gelada. A promenade lined with cafés and restaurants runs along the seafront, making it a pleasant place for a stroll even if you’re not planning a day of swimming. Water shoes can be useful on the stony shore. Conditions in the water, the availability of lifeguards and facilities change with the seasons, so check local notices before your visit. The promenade is convenient for families, as it’s easy to combine time at the beach with a break in town; the designated paths offer the easiest access for pushchairs.

At the southern end of the coastal development, the Serra Gelada natural area begins. A popular trip leads from Albir to the lighthouse, Faro de l’Albir. The route offers views of the coast and is more than a short stroll along the beach: pack sun protection, water and sturdy footwear in your day bag. Check for any access restrictions and the current condition of the trail. If you don’t want to hike, you can simply plan a relaxed day at the promenade and beach.

Town centre and history

The centre of l’Alfàs del Pi lies a few kilometres from the sea and offers a different side of the municipality from its tourist-oriented coast. Around Plaça Major and San José Church, you’ll find local shops and places to eat. Plan your visit as a stroll through a town in its own right, rather than as an extension of the beach promenade. The name Alfàs is often linked to Arabic roots and fertile land; agriculture, particularly almond growing, has shaped the region’s history. For specific market or festival dates, check the municipality’s current events calendar, as days and programmes may change.

Hiking and day trips

Its location between Altea and Benidorm makes l’Alfàs a good base for short trips along the coast. Altea draws visitors with its hilltop old town and a different, more intimate coastal atmosphere; Altea is a great place to combine with an evening stroll. In Benidorm, the city beach, old town and larger leisure attractions contrast with the quieter base in l’Albir. Further south, Villajoyosa offers colourful seaside houses and a historic centre with its own distinct character.

For longer days in nature, take a look at the natural parks of the Valencia region. Serra Gelada is a protected natural park encompassing coastal and marine areas; stay on marked trails and follow conservation and fire-safety rules. Getting there and planning your stay

The municipality is on the northern Costa Blanca. Alicante–Elche Airport and regional road links are convenient options for getting there; the best combination depends on where you’re staying and when you travel. Check current bus services and timetables directly with the operator, especially if you’re arriving with luggage or late in the evening. A rental car makes it easier to reach more remote starting points for excursions, but it isn’t automatically necessary if you’re staying only in l’Albir. When hiking in Serra Gelada, bear in mind that the heat and limited shade can make the route more challenging than it looks on the map.

When choosing accommodation, one simple question can help: would you like to be by the sea every day, or would you prefer to stay in an established town centre? l’Albir is a good fit for the beach, promenade and route to the lighthouse. The centre of l’Alfàs del Pi offers more distance from the coast and a stronger sense of local everyday life. Both places make good bases for trips to Altea and Benidorm. When booking, check the actual distance to the coast, as the municipality is not centred around a single town centre.
