Torreblanca between wetlands, beaches and cultural heritage
Torreblanca combines an important wetland, various beaches, historic religious buildings and an extensive network of routes. The Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Nature Park shapes the area just as much as the coast. There are also specific destinations for different day plans: short and longer routes, protected landscapes, opportunities for swimming and cultural heritage ranging from the 15th century to works of art from later periods.
Cycling routes between the town centre and the nature park
The 21.75-kilometre circular route “Rincones de Torreblanca†connects the town centres of Torreblanca and Torrenostra with the nature park. It presents no particular physical or technical difficulties and runs mainly along paved roads.
A considerably shorter option is the linear route “A La Gola del Trencâ€. It starts at Torreblanca railway station, follows the edge of Prat Nature Park and continues through the park to Gola del Trenc. There, an observatory offers a good view of the wetland. The route is 3.84 kilometres long, presents no particular physical or technical difficulties and runs approximately half of the way along paved roads.
“Torreblanca en Bici†comprises more than 50 kilometres of signposted routes. These can be ridden individually, with the family or in a group. In addition, the circular route “Iniciación a la Montaña†starts in the town centre of Torreblanca and is suitable for all users.
Wetland and beaches
The Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Nature Park is the most important wetland in the province of Castellón and is among the least altered wetlands in the Valencian Community. It is also one of the wetlands of international importance listed under the Ramsar Convention. The route to Gola del Trenc runs directly along the edge of this natural area and continues into the park.
At the wide urban beach of Playa Torrenostra, two long breakwaters calm the water, making the beach suitable for swimming. Playa Norte is a long sandy and pebble beach with a gently sloping seabed of fine, even sand. Playa Sur is a protected natural beach in the centre of the nature park.
Other beaches are located in different surroundings of Torreblanca: Playa de Torrenostra is in the immediate vicinity, while Playa del Moro, Playa Romana and Playa del Cargador are in the area around Torreblanca.
Cultural heritage in the town
The Iglesia de San Francisco in Torreblanca dates from the 15th century, served a defensive purpose and belongs to the Morellan Gothic style. The Ermita del Calvario is a protected cultural heritage complex comprising the original fortress church of San Francisco, the Capilla del SantÃsimo Cristo del Calvario and an ascending zigzag path.
The interior of the Iglesia Parroquial de San Bartolomé is defined by three naves, four bays and side chapels. The crossing dome is covered with blue glazed tiles; direct light enters through eight windows. The interior includes, among other works, the “Salvador†by Josep Ferrer, scenes from the life of Saint Bartholomew by JoaquÃn Oliet and a 17th-century painting by José Orient depicting the Berber pirate raid of 1397.
The Stations of the Cross at Calvario are made of ashlar stone and arranged along gently ascending zigzag paths lined with cypress trees. Some bear dedications and dates from 1739 to 1741.
